Tie philosophy
Martin Brokenleg's Circle of Courage philosophy is a holistic model aimed at fostering positive youth development through the integration of four key values: belonging, mastery, independence, and generosity. Each of these values is represented by a different animal, symbolizing the qualities and teachings that align with them. This philosophy emphasizes the importance of nurturing these attributes in young people to promote resilience and foster a sense of community. Once taught these teachings hold true throughout our lifetime and help us to stay in harmony and balance.
The first value, Belonging, is represented by the Killer Whale. In many Indigenous cultures, the killer whale is a powerful symbol of family, community, and social bonds. This value highlights the necessity of feeling connected to others, fostering a sense of security, and creating a supportive environment. Youth who feel they belong are more likely to thrive emotionally and socially, as they experience acceptance and love from their families and communities.
